Week Four - Gallery Critique

On the first of August my class and I traveled to the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art. The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art debuted early March of this year and will be wrapped up January of next year. Numerous famous artists are featured in this particular gallery that range from the early impressionist Monet, to the appropriated collages of Rauschenberg. As I was perusing through the gallery focused on landscapes or a "Sense of Place", I had this disjointed feeling as though the art pieces did not flow, despite their similar themes. Although the gallery's artwork was all magnificent in their own ways, I personally felt as though it could have flowed better through the repositioning of the art works. Over all, the gallery was impressive on the range of artists and the artwork that it included. One of my favorite art works was from a German artist, Torben Giehler, titled Boogie Woogie. I personally love the geometrically abstract piece that makes me feel as though I am slightly falling because of the diagonal placement of the squares. The colors that Giehler used seemed as though they were chosen strategically because the main lines of the painting are all orange like they are the streets in a grid of a city. I love the simplicity of the painting and I think that was my favorite piece in the whole gallery. A close second for my favorite piece in the gallery is a monotone painting of a park, with a couple of benches in the middle ground and what looks like a basketball court in the foreground. Unfortunately the gallery operators did not allow excess items so I do not know the name of the painting and artist, however, it is a very detailed, gorgeous modern painting of an everyday life landscape. One of the best part of the painting is the background that has so much detail yet fades away like it would if someone was really looking at the landscape. The choice to go monotone is interesting, and I think it really allows the viewer to see all the details in the painting, whereas if there was color it would take away from the detail. All in all I believe the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art was a great field trip from class that gave us students a taste of fine art that we do not typically see in Las Vegas.
